History
Relay for life originated
in 1985 when a colo-rectal surgeon from Washington was
sponsored to walk around a track for 24 hours. He raised
$27,000 in sponsorships for the American Cancer Society. The
next year others joined in to make it the relay-style event it
is today. It has since grown nationwide.
Cancer is the second leading cause of
death in the United States today. Each day we become a step
closer to finding a cure with research sponsored by the
American Cancer Society. This society deals with everything
from funding the research to supporting awareness to helping
patients cope and recover. Of the money raised, 97% goes to
the American Cancer Society while only 3% goes toward
administrative costs. The American cancer Society has funded 30
Nobel Prize winning scientists including those whom discovered
the Pap test and bone marrow transplants.Last year, Relay for
Life raised more than 92 million dollars nationally! Isn't it
about time that you got involved????? |
